在世界各地的實驗室裡，材料革命正在悄悄發生。科學家打算用漸趨細小的尺度操縱物質，並從生物世界中擷取靈感。曾經只有在科幻小說裡才見得到的物質，如今科學家將為我們逐步實現。

PU塊狀共聚物：這透明材料能夠「吞下」高速入射的子彈

想像一種不過3公分厚的材料，竟然可以擋下秒速達350公尺的子彈，還能夠把子彈包覆起來，表面一點痕跡或裂縫也不留。要是用這種材料製造總統座車或是裝甲運兵車的擋風玻璃，或許能救人一命。

剛剛提到的這種材料叫做PU塊狀共聚物。根據美國萊斯大學工程師奈德‧湯馬斯教授（Ned Thomas）所言，這種材料之所以有辦法封住子彈的射入點，是因為當子彈以高速接觸這種材料時，材料當場就熔化了，這似乎使得子彈射入的能量消散，有助於材料逮住射入物；之後材料就會重新密封，把子彈射入留下的縫隙塞起來。湯馬斯最近用電子顯微鏡研究這種材質，才推測出這一連串的事件過程。

除了防彈玻璃以外，PU（即聚胺基甲酸酯）還能拿來做防彈衣，甚至裝在太空船跟衛星的外殼，吸收可能會造成嚴重損傷的太空垃圾以及其他飛射而來的東西。湯馬斯說，如果改用同等尺寸的鋼鐵，不但較難阻擋高速飛來的物體，而且重量還是PU的7倍。

首先，需要瞭解一點歷史：

在十七世紀末，牛頓成功的透過力學與微積分描述了星體的運動，而往後的兩個世紀，各種學問不斷發展的過程中，牛頓力學都一再的被證實。

屹立不搖的牛頓力學度過了這麼長的時間，直到光譜實驗的出現。

在光譜實驗中，氫氣或其他的氣體被通入放電管內，當放電時氣體就會發光，其發出的光線呈現譜線狀：特定能量的光很多，其他能量的光卻幾乎一點也沒有。而當時提出最好的解釋是波耳模型（雖然這個模型現在看來蠻荒謬的）。

波耳模型中電子繞著原子核轉，構成一個原子，而且電子只能在特定軌域中繞行，這些軌域必須滿足一個條件：角動量是普朗克常數的整數倍。這就是著名的角動量量子化概念。因為電子只能在特定的軌道間來回跳動，進行能量轉換，因此自然只能放出特定能量的光子。

假如在牛頓力學的眼中看，電子應當可以用任意的軌道繞原子核，但波耳模型才能正確的描述光譜位置，因此波耳有理，顯然牛頓力學不是各處通用的。

但波耳模型在氦氣的放電實驗中卻也無法準確的算出軌道。這顯示需要更完整的理論，於是誕生了量子力學。

什麼是量子力學呢？

量子力學是一套能完整算出能量軌道的方法（只要運動速度遠小於光速都可用），就像牛頓力學是用來算位置與時間的關係的方法，你只要把作用力寫下，就能推算出未來物體將怎樣運動，量子力學也相仿，只要確定位能形式，理論上就可以算出能量軌道。（實際上，數學問題不一定都解得出來。）量子化的現象不再需要人工加入（像波耳那樣），而會自動從計算中跳出來！

這個學問有趣之處是他的概念與現象：

概念一、你必須把粒子想成一個機率波，例如電子，他不再是一個粒子，而是一個機率分佈，一個機率波。你再也不能說電子在這裡，或在那裡，只能說，電子有可能在這裡出現，出現的機率有多高。

概念二、每一個能量軌道對應到一個相對穩定的機率波，電子可以在這些軌道中切換，並且伴隨著能量（例如光）吸收、放出。

概念三、粒子的動量越大，波長越短；頻率越大，能量越高。

概念四、你永遠無法準確的知道電子的位置和動量，而且當你把其中一個量得越準，另一個就越不準，這就是測不準原理。

現象一、粒子有波的特性，所以也有繞射、干涉現象。若把粒子射向兩個狹縫，狹縫後面的電子會出現調紋狀分佈：狹縫空洞以外的區域後面也會出現粒子；狹縫空洞的區域後面也可能沒有粒子。

現象二、粒子遇到障礙物時，有一定的機率穿入障礙物。如果障礙物夠薄，就可能穿出，這就是穿隧效應。
