中國官方發出通知，媒體對3月1日昆明火車站發生的砍殺事件，需嚴格按新華社通稿或當地權威部門發佈的資訊報道，不做大標題、不配圖片。而中國多個新聞網站如騰訊和網易等的滾動新聞亦一度於凌晨停止更新相關消息。（大陸中心／綜合外電報導）
