殼牌石油 (Shell) 是近來又一家宣布減記油田面積價值數十億美元的大型油氣公司，這讓一直對頁岩油氣開發抱持懷疑的人士，有了個理由能質疑，水力壓裂法所帶來的油氣革命是否已碰上大問題。

在殼牌於 8 月 1 日的聲明中，超過 20 億美元減值主要都與位於北美洲的頁岩蘊油油田有關，反映出最新探鑽與估值的結果。其他已對美國頁岩油田資產進行減記的石油公司，還有英國天然氣集團 (BG Group)(BG-UK)及澳洲必和必拓 (BHP Billiton)(BHP-AU)。

有市場人士認為，石油業者過去太過熱中頁岩油氣開發，現在正是反效果出現的時候。研究機構 Bernstein Research 分析師也在備忘錄表示，應對殼牌探鑽結果與預期的落差謹慎看待。

但路透社專欄主筆 John Kemp 分析，殼牌和其他大型石油公司的減記，只表示它們太晚進入頁岩油開發的競爭，在低品質與未適度探勘的資產上做了過度支出，而不代表頁岩油氣革命有衰減的跡象。此項技術的生產潛力，應與石油公司購買開發權的花費分開來思考。

在 2007 至 2011 年間，頁岩油氣產業呈現出泡沫化的種種跡象：顛覆性的新技術為早期投入者帶來豐厚財富，其他投資人與企業也一窩蜂跟進。可以預見，後到的投資人得花更高價格取得開發權、成本上升、市場供過於求、油價下跌、豐厚利潤不再，導致資產減記的結果。

資產減記都發生在頁岩熱潮的晚期投入者身上，不管他們是以租用或收購方式取得開採權。

頁岩氣的生產對油氣與凝析業者自身造成衝擊，因為頁岩氣產量很大，而使天然氣或乙烷、丙烷、丁烷等產品價格下跌。但對石油業者而言，主要衝擊來自於對油田的過度支出。頁岩有高度異質性，不同地點的頁岩組成可能差別很大，且各個頁岩油田的開採情形均不相同，難以等而論之，或依循他例估計產量。

在每個不同的頁岩油田，壓裂法需要多次測試與鑽探來找出最好的生產點。早期投入頁岩油氣生產的業者，已經過長期測試，找到其油田中最有效率的生產點，他們也較早簽下開發租約，分紅及租金等各項條款都較為合理，較晚進入的業者條件就相對不利。就像當年的淘金潮，持續發燒個幾年後，姍姍來遲的企業只能租到較無價值的土地，也不那麼令人意外。

雖然並非所有新油田都一定會令人失望，但較昂貴的勘察支出與鑑定工作是無法避免的，探鑽與壓裂都要經多次實驗，才能找到正確的開採點。有些頁岩層就是產量不佳，而有些則仰賴更多的投資。這些在頁岩熱潮高點才加入的企業，他們必須體認已經過度支出，並且絕對不會在預期的時間點內獲得理想回報。

敘利亞內戰爆發已二年多，如何拯救瀕危的經濟，成為另一場艱苦的戰爭。《洛杉磯時報》報導，敘利亞因國內長期衝突，面臨物價飛漲、貨幣貶值、百業蕭條的困境。人民大排長龍，搶著把手上的敘利亞鎊換成美元，政府卻無法拿出有效對策解決難題，嚴苛的經濟環境也已成為人民道德意識的最大考驗。

過去敘利亞物價低廉、資源充裕又有健保補助，即便收入普通亦能安居樂業，被視為中東最宜人居住的地方之一。如今情勢卻已截然不同，超過兩年的內戰，讓數千家工廠付之一炬，大片國土掌握在不同派系人馬的手中，城鎮與農田都遭毀壞。

多數有關敘利亞的報導，都聚焦於政府軍與叛軍之間的衝突，在此同時，整個國家其實也在與日漸蕭條的經濟奮戰。阿薩德政府雖持續從伊朗與俄羅斯方面得到金援，但多數用以擴充軍隊。敘利亞平民百姓的日常生活，深受物價通膨與貨幣貶值所苦。

曾經為敘利亞帶來豐富外匯收入的觀光業現已崩潰。過去曾吸引絡繹不絕遊客的古羅馬遺址、十字軍城堡、奧圖曼市集等遺跡，如今多半化為斷壁頹垣，只剩武裝份子穿梭在瓦礫堆中。

2011年三月，敘利亞鎊對美元的匯率還是47比1，內戰爆發後貨幣急速貶值，至今年三月已跌至300比1。隨後敘國政府為穩定敘鎊貶勢，從日漸減少的現金儲備中挹注數百萬美元進場，匯率卻仍停留在175比1，黑市的匯率則達200比1之高。

根據統計數字，敘利亞的通膨指數在去年已高達50%。但許多大馬士革人民表示，物價在去年漲了二到三倍。近來民眾為準備伊斯蘭教重要節慶「開齋節」購買物資，更能感受到通膨的壓力。

貨物價格高漲、銷售量又減少，儘管有些商家仍願意發揮善心寬待手頭拮据的顧客，卻未必人人都能在動盪的時局中保持良善。在大馬士革老城區開雜貨店與香料店的民眾巴卡表示：「我們以合理價格販賣米與麵餅，但有些人失去了道德觀，想哄抬物價、賺取不義之財。未來敘利亞人會變成什麼樣子？我對此感到憂慮。」
