早在BMW四缸大樓以及碗型建築完成之前，BMW其實就已經有博物館的存在，而且是在1920年代中期便已經在設立，而當時是以BMW在慕尼黑的工廠中以專屬的方式進行呈列，儘管博物館的設置多以過去歷史發展過程中的車款為主，但對於當時成立並不算久的BMW來說，也只能以現行的產品來同時進行展示。
