AutoNet汽車日報先前曾報導過，目標於2018年奪下全球最大汽車集團寶座的VW集團，在2009時為了擴展在中小型車款的開發能力以及於新興市場發展的實力，因此選擇了與日本SUZUKI結盟，並耗資超過2200億日圓收購鈴木自動車計19.9%的股份、而鈴木自動車也以交叉持股的方式取得VW集團2.5%的股份，此舉也讓VW集團成為SUZUKI的最大股東。
