一早進辦公室，發現今天老闆換人了，你會怎麼樣？

有136年歷史的美國重量級媒體《華盛頓郵報》前兩天在網站版刊登易主消息，亞馬遜創辦人貝佐斯以2.5億美元收購該報。《華郵》公司董事長唐納葛蘭姆在內部會議向員工發布 這個消息時，有些老員工忍不住哭了出來。

《華郵》二度普立茲獎得主的專欄作家Gene Weingarten在自家的專欄寫了一封公開建言（公開信全文），提醒新老闆貝佐斯，經營媒體與經營企業是兩碼子事；也呼籲他，做一位值得下屬擁戴的老闆。這封信用字簡單，很多學生讀了都說沒有陌生字彙，我們一起看信中最後三段有力的想法，有幾個不錯句子多念幾次，將來也許會派上用場。

I think I speak for more than myself when I say that the main reason I have high hopes for your stewardship is that Don Graham said it was the right thing for the paper. He said you are the right guy. That was enough for me.
我想我不只代表自己這麼說，我對你有很高的期望，最主要的原因是Don Graham說，這對報紙是正確的事。他說你是對的人。這對我來說就足夠了。

“Great” is an overused term, and sports has rendered it almost meaningless, so I won’t say you have just bought a “great” newspaper. I’m not even sure you’ve bought a “newspaper” in any understood sense. You have bought a place filled with enormously talented and dedicated journalists who are, at the moment, terrified at the prospect of change we don’t really understand. We’ve already lost some fine people to that terror.

特別要提出來的兩個用法：

1、Not ....in any understood sense 在任何可理解的層面
"in any ......sense"是很口語的用法，與not合用，這個sense是指意義或者判斷力。不好直譯，我們用例句來瞭解它的用法。例如：
It’s a good story. Unfortunately, it’s not true, at least not in any meaningful sense. （這是一個不錯的題材。不幸的是，該題材不是真實的。不管從哪個角度看，都不是真的。）

2、Kick up, kiss down 挑戰上級，捍衛下屬
原本Kiss up, kick down是一個俚語，指專門捧上司，欺壓下屬的主管。其中”kiss up”是「討好；巴結」的意思，因為當我們要討好或巴結一個人的時候，我們不都是姿態要擺低一點嗎？所以，「討好；巴結」的英文就是”kiss up”。

例句：Relax! He is only trying to kiss up to you, that's all.（放輕鬆點!他只不過是想討好你而已！）

Kick down字面上意思是往下踢，指欺負下屬。一個媚上欺下的人，英文可以用kiss-up, kick-down kind of guy形容。

這封信把up和down對調，上和下巔倒，就成了挑戰上級，捍衛下屬。小玩一下文字，有新鮮感。
