民進黨智庫23日舉辦首場「民進黨八年執政研討會」，黨主席蘇貞昌受訪表示，民進黨不是做一個望風說月的政黨，要對人民負責，要重返執政的政黨；不會和其他政黨比爛，也不會自吹自擂，因此好好回憶當年的足跡、成績，以及值得檢討的地方，避免限於盲點而不自知。
蘇貞昌指出，外界說民進黨不敢談過去8年的執政，或說不值得談，抑或是找了很多理由延宕。他說，「民進黨是要開始了」，開始並不是誇讚自己有多好，而是要真真正正地「向人民報告、與社會對話、對歷史負責」。
蘇貞昌說，經歷了時間的洗禮，可以更清楚的看見當時所作所為的結果、對錯，情緒也可以放下。
「研討會是對人或對事？」蘇貞昌表示，對人難免會有情緒有恩怨，會陷入討論上不必要的盲點，不如直接就事論事，因為民進黨希望知道自己到底有沒有做事？做了哪些事？那些是好哪些還不足？以謙卑的態度去面對，誠實地去檢討，勇敢地了解通盤的問題，然後才可以有更新的將來！
蘇貞昌強調，「唯有自信才敢檢討自己，唯有誠實面對，並且超越過去，才能有能力、有希望地策畫將來」。
另外，前立委林濁水認為通過前總統陳水扁再入黨申請後，辦研究會是「迎扁」，讓他找不到理由參加。蘇貞昌受訪表示，這個研討會是眾人籌備了3、4個月，目標在於能夠檢討並策劃未來，與近期發生的事件無關。
