澳洲總理陸克文(Kevin Michael Rudd)4日公布國會改選日期為9月7日，期望帶領勞工黨（Labor Party）繼續執政，為3年後重任黨魁，力拼一場完美戰役。
大選定在9月7日舉行，競選活動5日正式展開。面對為期5個禮拜的選戰，陸克文認為，經濟是大選焦點，澳洲長達10年由中國需求帶動的礦業出口導向經濟，已經告一段落，現在得另謀出路。
陸克文在6月執政黨勞工黨的黨魁選舉中，擊敗前總理吉拉德回鍋後，勞工黨的聲勢從谷底翻升。7月的民調結果顯示，勞工黨和在野聯盟支持率各為50%，且回流勞工黨的選民持續增加。
雖然勞工黨與在野聯盟的差距已拉近，但據《中廣新聞網》的報導，陸克文承認，目前選情對他領導的工黨，仍稍嫌不利，但好在距離投票還有一個月，他希望選民想一想，誰最有能力帶領國家面對當前的經濟挑戰。
但澳洲目前的財政正快速惡化，不但今年度政府赤字急速膨脹，經濟成長預估值也不斷下修，失業率更是攀升。面對這些問題，在野黨批評政府浪費太多金錢在刺激經濟，根本是在虛擲公帑。它們宣稱如果勝選，將設法把失控的預算，拉回正軌。
陸克文敲定大選日期在9月7日，因此無法參加9月5日、6日在俄羅斯舉行的G20高峰會。對此，陸克文說，將由外交部長卡爾（BobCarr）代替他出席。現在大選日期定案，一個月後將由勞工黨黨魁陸克文與在野聯盟領袖艾波特正面對決。
