轎車搭載四輪傳動系統多半是因為環境因素，例如常下雪的區域就需要穩固四驅來緊抓地面。因此BMW在北美市場從3、4、5、6、7-Series車系，都會提供xDrive四輪傳動車型可選，只是在英國市場因為BMW表示右駕車型的xDrive系統需要重新調整，因此僅有提供1、3-Series車型能選，只是沒想到在銷售數字上竟然有所突破。
