日本隊為備戰2017年的WBC世界棒球經典賽，9日正式宣布由前軟銀鷹隊球員小久保裕紀接任，他也認為這對他來說是個大挑戰。
小久保並沒有當過總教練的經驗，不過42歲的他跟球員感情都很好，當時引退時，還有很多人捨不得。
小久保說：「對於沒有總教練經驗的我來說，要不要接受這個任務對我來說很猶豫，不過人生就是要有挑戰才有意義，這不是能不能做到的事情，而是要不要做這樣的勇氣，讓我有了決定的想法，軟銀的王貞治會長也在我背後推了一把。」
對於他的年紀是日本隊近年來WBC經典賽中最年輕，也最沒有執教經驗，小久保說：「我跟其他總教練比起來比較年輕，以接近現役球員這樣的身份跟他們溝通，我認為十分重要。」
日本隊的球員組成方面，小久保也很坦白說：「以現狀並沒有『請您務必要用這位球員』的想法，2017年WBC的最終目標，目前還是要以中長期的觀點來看，希望可以找尋4年後能成為主力的球員。」
不過談到未來展望，小久保認為還是希望能打造日本武士這樣的頂級球隊，並展現魅力，希望可以讓人有背負著為國家而戰的心境，在這四年內可以讓球員感受到想入選「小久保日本隊」的想法。 (接下一頁)
